The Dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied breed of hound, although some countries actually tend to classify it in the terrier group of dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, the dachshund is among the top ten dog breeds in the United States. This lovable companion is often playful, but can be quite stubborn at times, especially when it comes to any type of training. Known for their devotion and loyalty to their owners and families, they can be somewhat antisocial with strangers, at least until they warm up to them.

Dachshunds are prone to several health issues, among the most common being Degenerative Disk Disease, also known as Intervertebral Disk disease (IVDD). Such back problems result in part from having a very long spinal column and a short ribcage, and may be exacerbated by obesity, jumping or vigorous physical activity. A dachshund with IVDD may have symptoms including reluctance to move, decreased appetite, muscle spasms, crying out in pain or hiding from people. Your dog may stumble when attempting to walk, or be unable to rise from a sitting or reclined position as well.

Treatment typically consists of anti-inflammatory medications and/or chronic pain medications, but a proper diagnosis is key to determining the best course of action. Serious cases involving disk herniation may require surgery to remove or repair the troublesome disk elements, which we are fully qualified to do. In addition to the medical regimen that may be required, there are many things you can do to help your pet be comfortable and live a great life.

If your Dachshund loves to burrow under a blanket on the couch, be sure to provide a ramp so he or she can get to their favorite spot without trying to jump. Baby or pet gates are also recommended if you have stairs in your home, as climbing up or down stairs may contribute to back discomfort or even injury. Refrain from strenuous workouts or rough play, but you do want to keep your Dachshund physically fit, so a healthy diet and relaxed regular walks are recommended.
